How to Measure Your Chest Circumference
Chest circumference is the primary parameter for determining outerwear sizes (jackets, coats, blazers, dresses, sweaters). For accurate results, you will need a measuring tape.
How to measure. Wrap the tape around your torso under the armpits, across the fullest part of your chest and shoulder blades. The tape should fit snugly against your body but not pinch it. Do not hold your breath and stand straight while measuring.
Tip. If your measurement is between two sizes, choose the larger one, especially if you prefer a looser fit or plan to wear a warm sweater underneath.
What Do Different Clothing Size Standards Mean?
- International Standard (INT) — an alphanumeric scale from XXS to 3XL and above. The easiest to understand but the least accurate: the same size "M" can correspond to a different chest circumference depending on the brand.
- Ukraine and Europe (EU/UA) — a numeric scale typically linked to half the chest circumference in centimeters (e.g., size 48 corresponds to a chest circumference of ~96 cm). For men's clothing, it matches the Ukrainian size marking.
- United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) — for men, they generally use the same numeric series as EU, with an offset of approximately 10 units (EU 48 ≈ US/UK 38). For women, it is a separate scale from 2 to 16+, which has changed historically (vanity sizing) and is therefore the least stable for conversion.
- China (CN) — consists of two numbers: height and chest circumference in centimeters, plus a letter for body type (A, B, C, Y). The most accurate system as it considers both height and chest circumference — but requires knowing both parameters.
