How to Measure Your Foot Length

Accurate foot measurement is the most reliable way to choose shoes, regardless of the brand or country of manufacture. The size on the box may vary among manufacturers, but the foot length in centimeters is a universal value suitable for any size chart.

How to measure. Place a piece of paper on the floor flat against a wall. Stand on the paper with your heel against the wall. Mark the paper where your longest toe ends, and measure the distance with a ruler — this is your foot length in centimeters.

A few important details. Measure both feet and use the larger measurement — feet are often asymmetrical. The best time for measurement is late afternoon after a day of activity. Measurements should be taken while wearing socks of the thickness you plan to wear with the shoes.

What Do Different Shoe Size Standards Mean?

  • European Standard (EU) — most common in continental Europe. The size is calculated from the insole length in Paris points (1 Paris point ≈ 6.67 mm). Because of this, the EU size chart does not convert into whole centimeters, and the difference between adjacent sizes is approximately 6–7 mm.
  • United States (US) — separate scales for men and women, starting from different baseline values. US women's sizes are typically 1.5 units larger than US men's for the same foot length. For example, a US men's 8 and a US women's 9.5 represent the same foot length.
  • United Kingdom (UK) — UK sizes are typically 0.5–1 unit smaller than US men's sizes for the same foot length. UK sizes are also used in Ireland, Australia, and India.
  • China / Mondopoint (CN) — the simplest and most accurate system: the size equals the foot length in millimeters. CN 260 = 26.0 cm foot length. The Mondopoint system is an international ISO standard and is also widely used in Japan and Korea.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What shoe size is considered the most common?
For women, the most popular sizes are 37 to 39 (EU), for men, 41 to 43 (EU), and for school-aged children, 33 to 36 (EU). However, this is just statistics: even within the same size, different brands can vary, so measuring your foot is always more accurate than using approximate charts.
  • What is the Chinese shoe size (CN)?
In China, the Mondopoint system is used — an international ISO standard that indicates foot length in millimeters. CN 260 means a 26.0 cm foot length. This is the easiest system to understand: if you know your foot length, you automatically know your CN size. That is why when buying shoes in Asian online stores, it is recommended to focus primarily on CN rather than EU or US.
  • How to choose shoe size for a rapidly growing child?
A child's foot grows by about one EU size every 2–3 months at an early age and somewhat slower after age 5. It is recommended to leave a 10–12 mm gap between the end of the longest toe and the tip of the shoe — which is about one size. A smaller gap squeezes the foot; too large a gap lets the shoe flop around and may cause blisters. Check your child's size every 2–3 months.
  • Is the size the same for sneakers, shoes, and boots?
Not always. Athletic shoes are usually made to accommodate a medium-thickness sock, so sneakers are often bought half a size larger than normal. Insulated boots or those with a thick insole are often bought a full size larger. High heels, on the other hand, may require a smaller size due to the foot shifting forward. Always focus on foot length in centimeters and compare it with the insole length of the specific model.
  • What to do if the left and right foot are different sizes?
This is common — most people have a 3–5 mm difference between feet. When choosing shoes, rely on the larger foot: tight shoes on one foot cause more discomfort than slightly loose ones on the other. If the difference is significant (more than half a size), you can use insoles for the smaller foot.
  • How to read sizes when multiple standards are listed on a shoe?
Many manufacturers list several systems on the box or label — for example, "42 / US 9 / UK 8 / 270". In this case, it is most reliable to refer to the CN or JP value (foot length in millimeters), as it does not depend on the brand's interpretation and is an absolute measurement.
